Calling all cocktail lovers! You can drink deliciously even without the booze. Alcohol-free drinks (also known as “mocktails”) are becoming more and more popular, particularly with crowds who are being mindful about their health, acting as designated drivers, or simply choosing not to indulge for whatever reason. An easy way to freshen up any alcohol-free beverage is by adding a shrub. Popular during colonial America, shrub is a syrup-like substance created by mixing vinegar, fruit, and sugar and allowing them to ferment together. Putting up shrub is a method of preserving the abundance of fruit that ripens during summer and fall months. In addition to being used in handcrafted beverages, shrubs can be used in salad dressings and as glazes for meat dishes.
At Lemon Street Market, we carry two brands of shrub: Christina Maser (Blueberry, Strawberry, and Raspberry) and Tait Farm Foods (Ginger, Cherry, Lime, Strawberry, Spiced Apple, Lemon, Cranberry, Orange, Blueberry, Grapefruit, Raspberry, and Rhubarb)
The typical rule of thumb for mixing shrub-based drinks is about 4-5 ounces of seltzer, club soda, or sparkling water with 1-2 ounces (to taste) of shrub. Then, just stir and enjoy! You can also start with a base of sparkling juice, sparkling lemonade, or ginger beer, and garnish with fruit or spices. Scary Cherry Fizz
- 1 part Tait Farm Foods Cherry Shrub
- 1 part Maine Root Ginger Brew
- Frozen cherries
Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a glass, stir, top with ice, and serve.
Creepy Cranberry Chiller
- 1 tbsp Tait Farm Foods Cranberry Shrub
- 2 tbsp Uncle Matt’s Organic Orange Juice
- 3 tbsp Maine Root Lemon Lime Soda
- 1/2 cup Hansen’s Club Soda or Mountain Valley Sparkling Water
- Frozen clementine slices
- Fresh or frozen cranberries
Instructions: Combine ingredients in a glass and top with ice cubes, 2 frozen clementine slices, and a couple cranberries for good measure.
Spiced Apple Haunted Hot Toddy
- 6 oz water
- 3-5g Lemon Street Market Rooibus Chai Tea (rooibus, candied ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, pink peppercorns, rose petals)
- 2-4 tbsp Tait Farm Foods Spiced Apple Shrub
- Sliced apple
- Cinnamon stick
Instructions: Place tea in steeper inside of mug and pour boiling water over it. Steep for 3 minutes, remove, stir in 2-3 tablespoons of apple shrub (to taste). Garnish with cinnamon stick and apple slice.
- Maine Root Ginger Brew
- Christina Maser Blueberry Shrub
- Fresh lime, cut in half
- Lime zest
Instructions: Pour ginger brew over a cup of ice. Add a splash of blueberry shrub (approximately 1-3 tbsp to taste) and juice from half of a lime. Garnish with lemon zest & enjoy!
